Your Subbuteo collection. Your way.

Subbuteo Collection Management

Start with the items you own and record the details useful to you.

Keep things simple, or go deeper with teams, references, figure types, bases, boxes, sets, accessories and condition whenever they matter.

A Subbuteo collection with boxed football teams, figures, pitch and stadium accessories.
The club name is only the starting point. Reference, figure generation, base combination, box, paint and regional production can distinguish one Subbuteo team from another.

Collect at your own depth

A useful Subbuteo record can be simple or highly detailed.

One item might need little more than a name, photograph and condition. Another might deserve detailed records of teams, references, figure types, bases, boxes, sets, accessories and condition. Both belong in Collectaneum.

Start quickly. Add detail when it earns its place.

Why the collection becomes difficult

The same football club can exist as several different collectibles

Historically, a Subbuteo reference usually described a colour scheme rather than one exclusive club. The same reference could serve several teams, while one real club could move through different references as its strip changed.

A useful registry therefore needs to preserve both football identity and Subbuteo production identity instead of treating the club name as enough.

Club name and reference

Separate the real football club from the Subbuteo reference, colour scheme and production period because one reference could represent several clubs.

Figure generation

Record flats, old heavyweights, classic heavyweights, zombies, lightweights, hybrids and later forms as distinct production families.

Bases and configuration

Track base and disc colours, attachment type, goalkeeper style and whether all figures belong together as one plausible factory team.

Boxes and labels

Preserve box type, address, logo, window, label, named or numbered status and regional packaging because these help date and authenticate the team.

Originality and repainting

Distinguish original hand painting and machine printing from touch-up, full repainting, fantasy teams and recreated labels or boxes.

Sets, accessories and stadiums

Connect pitches, goals, floodlights, figures, scoreboards, stands, paperwork and other components to complete editions and stadium environments.

From reference number to owned team

Build the record in connected layers

Shared catalogue knowledge can describe a recognised reference, figure type, regional issue or set while repairs, repainting, missing figures, box condition and provenance remain specific to your owned example.

Identify the team

Record reference number, suggested club or national identity, figure type, production period, base style and regional or licensed production.

Distinguish the production state

Capture hand-painted or printed finish, kit details, base and disc combination, goalkeeper type, box style, label and known variant.

Describe your example

Preserve figure integrity, paint wear, repairs, repainting, base condition, box condition, completeness, replacements and storage history.

Attach the evidence

Connect photographs, catalogues, receipts, reference notes, provenance, restoration history and valuations to the exact owned team or set.

A record in practice

Eleven matching players do not automatically make an original team

The shared record may identify the reference, club interpretation, figure generation, expected base colours, goalkeeper type, box style, production period and regional context.

The owned-item record then captures whether the figures belong together, whether paint is original, whether bases or discs have been swapped, snapped ankles or repairs, box and label condition, missing paperwork, acquisition source, photographs and valuations.

Two teams with the same reference can therefore share catalogue knowledge while retaining very different originality and completeness histories.

Owned-item evidence

Paint, bases and boxes work together as evidence

Factory brushwork, peg or bar-and-slot construction, goalkeeper rods, base combinations, box addresses and label style can support or challenge the claimed production state. Keep those observations attached to the exact team.

Important collecting distinctions

Details that should not be collapsed into one label

Subbuteo records are clearer when club identity, production state, originality and playability remain separate questions.

Club or reference

A team reference describes a kit identity, not necessarily one unique football club. The same club can appear under several references across time.

Original paint or restored appearance

Uneven original hand painting can be stronger evidence of authenticity than a visually perfect later repaint.

Rare or unverified

An unfamiliar named-box or uncatalogued team may be genuinely scarce, a fantasy repaint, or a plausible reconstruction. Evidence matters.

Playable or untouched

A repaired team may be better for play while an untouched but worn team may be more desirable to originality-focused collectors.

Condition reaches beyond the figures

Paint, plastics, bases, rods and packaging can age differently

Players can suffer snapped ankles, bends, paint loss or reglues; bases can crack or wear; goalkeeper rods can bend; clear box windows split; cardboard crushes or fades; pitches and paperwork have their own storage problems.

Keeping those observations separate creates a more useful record than one overall grade, especially where a playable team and a collector-grade team would be judged very differently.

Learn more when you want to

Research the production state, then preserve the evidence

The Knowledge Center supports documentation, authentication, condition, restoration and valuation decisions. The registry keeps photographs, research notes and intervention history connected to the exact owned team or set.

Collectaneum does not authenticate, grade or value an object for you. It keeps conclusions and supporting material connected to the item so the record remains reviewable as Subbuteo scholarship develops.
